Under 3 Philosophy:
‘Under 3’ trips are for social, rusty or aspiring paddlers who enjoy a regular trip out on a river somewhere guaranteed to be below Grade 3.
Skill Level Required:
The ability to control a boat on flat water is a prerequisite – i.e. paddle straight for 500m, turn quickly, capsize and exit the boat. Ring if unsure as these trips are not for complete beginners. Experienced paddlers are also welcome of course!
Those aged 8-16yrs are welcome as long as they have a paddling guardian present – someone who takes full responsibility for them on water. These trips are not suitable for those under 8yrs.
Whilst there is an assigned leader these are still normal club trips where participants are expected to take responsibility for their gear, transport and fitness for the trip. The leader will generally be an experienced paddler, have some group management skills, be familiar with the river and provide guidance on water to ensure participants remain safe and enjoy the day. They reserve the right to veto participation if equipment or paddling skills are deemed unsafe or insufficient.
Our standard venues are the Derwent River anywhere between Meadowbank Dam and Hayes or the Huon River anywhere between Tahune and Ranelagh. We keep the length down to around 10km.
With more water we may venture onto the Upper Picton or other suitable sections. Occasionally we may go to a single rapid to surf, practice rolling etc.
Ring or email the leader to discuss the trip or confirm your attendance a week prior. Participants must be members of an Australian Canoeing affiliated club for insurance purposes. Ring to discuss options.
